No! Smart Remote TV Universal works over your home Wi-Fi network using standard TCP/IP protocols (SSDP, mDNS, and WebSockets). You do not need an external IR blaster or any additional hardware. Just connect your iPhone and TV to the same Wi-Fi.
Starting in iOS 14+, Apple requires apps to request Local Network access so they can discover and connect to smart hardware on your Wi-Fi (such as your Samsung, LG, Sony, or Roku TV). We only use this permission to find your TV. Your local data never leaves your device.
The very first time you tap your TV in the app, your TV screen will display a prompt: "Allow Smart Remote TV to connect?". Simply use your physical remote or TV buttons to select "Allow" once. After that, the app auto-connects permanently.
You can import any valid public or personal `.m3u` or `.m3u8` playlist URL into the IPTV tab. The app parses the channel list and allows you to watch live streams directly on your iPhone or cast the stream to your Smart TV.
Ensure both your iPhone and TV are on the exact same Wi-Fi band (avoid using a Guest network where devices cannot communicate with each other). Check that "Local Network" is toggled ON in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Visit our Support Center for a step-by-step checklist.
